LASIK eye surgery is a type of refractive eye procedure that is in common practice to correct several types of vision abnormalities such as astigmatism. Other vision issues that LASIK eye surgery has been used to correct include hyperopia and myopia.

Types of LASIK procedures

The three main types of LASIK procedures that ophthalmologists perform include: flap creation, laser remodeling, and repositioning of the flap.

IntraLase LASIK:

IntraLase is a type of LASIK eye surgery that focuses on using femtosecond laser microkeratome to create a corneal flap, rather than the alternate method of using a mechanical keratome which utilizes a steel blade to create the same corneal flap.

CustomVue LASIK:

CustomVue is a type of LASIK eye surgery to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism using a highly customized laser to correct eye imperfections.

Keratome Conventional LASIK:

Keratome is an outpatient procedure that is an alternate form of LASIK eye surgery that corrects many of the same eye abnormalities as the CustomVue and IntraLase procedures. An ophthalmologist assists patients in determining which procedure is best for treatment.

History of LASIK Surgery

Originally developed in Bogota, Colombia during the 1950s by ophthalmologist Jose Barraquer, the process began when he would cut small flaps into a patient’s cornea, thus reshaping the eye and correcting the vision.

In 1968, the excimer laser was developed at the University of California by Mani Lal Bhaumik and was announced in Denver in 1973 as a viable surgery success. At that point, the Bhaumik patented his invention and marketed it throughout the world for corrective vision use.

By the early 1980s, Rangaswamy Srinivasan determined that an ultraviolet version of the excimer could be used on standard human eye tissue without destroying any of the surrounding areas with heat destruction.

Other pioneers in the field of laser procedures include Steven Trokel, Charles Munnerlyn, Terry Clapham, and Marguerite B. MacDonald who performed the very first procedure that ever completed on a human test sample.

Patient Testimonial:

“It has been 3 years since my LASIK surgery and I have been very happy with the results. No glasses except for sun glasses for sunny driving and the beach! I have recommended the eye surgery to all of my friends and family.  I read an average of 200 hours a month and since Dr. Siems performed my LASIK surgery my eyes don’t seem to strain like they did when I wore glasses. Plus, I like the payment plan. Keep up the good work!”
