Eye Exams in Las Vegas, NV

The key to maintaining eye health is regular eye exams. In Las Vegas, Henderson or Temecula the best place to get them is Siems LASIK & Eye Centers. When you have your eyes checked on regular basis, we can detect eye diseases or other abnormalities that may be forming but haven’t caused symptoms yet. Early intervention is crucial in preventing vision loss from conditions like glaucoma disease, which may not present symptoms until significant and irreversible damage has already happen. Early detection gives you a choice of treatments and reduces the possibility of permanent damage.

Benefits of a Comprehensive Eye Examination

You should get one of these every year, and that regularity is especially critical for children so their schoolwork does not suffer. Older adults are at higher risk for eye conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration, and cataracts. The exam allows us to detect everything from simple refractive errors to serious eye problems or diseases. Some of the ones we can diagnose are:

  • Amblyopia (Lazy Eye)
  • Strabismus
  • Eye-tracking Difficulty
  • Glaucoma
  • Diabetic Retinopathy

Even in younger, healthy adults who are asymptomatic, a regular eye exam is essential because it can even detect problems affecting the rest of the body. Serious medical conditions like high cholesterol, diabetes, and high blood pressure, can be detected. This empowers patients to seek treatment early.

The Comprehensive Eye Examination Procedure

A comprehensive exam is different from a vision screening. The latter only tests visual acuity and does not require a specialist. In fact, it’s common for them to be performed by school nurses, opticians, pediatricians, and other healthcare providers. We perform the following tests to thoroughly evaluate the eyes:

  • Visual Acuity
  • Visual Field
  • Retinal Examination Under Pupil Dilation
  • Slit-Lamp
  • Tonometry (Tests Intraocular Pressure (IOP))
  • Keratometry (Measures The Curvature Of The Cornea)
    Refraction

Tonometry checks for the presence of glaucoma, and keratometry tests for astigmatism. All of the above are safe for all patients. Based on our diagnostic findings, we may recommend:

  • Eyeglasses
  • Contact Lenses
  • Medication for Infection or Inflammation
  • Vision Therapy
  • Vitamins or other supplements
  • Eye Surgery

Common Refractive Errors

These are the most common eye conditions diagnosed during a comprehensive exam and often cause blurry vision. Refractive errors affect millions of Americans and often worsen with age. Fortunately, they are easily treated.

Also known as nearsightedness or shortsightedness, myopia is a condition where nearby objects are clear and those far away are blurry. Nearly a third of Americans have some degree of nearsightedness.

Also known as farsightedness, hyperopia is the opposite of myopia. This time, the focus on distant objects is better than that of objects closer to the eye, making nearby objects appear blurry. The eye is designed to focus images directly on the surface of the retina; with hyperopia, light rays focus behind the surface of the retina, producing a blurry image.

This occurs when the eye’s curvature is irregular. There are two types of astigmatism: corneal, where shape of the cornea (the clear covering of the eye) is what’s irregular, and lenticular, when the lens is. Corneal is more common. Astigmatism can result in blurred vision at any distance.

Presbyopia, meaning “old eye,” is a condition that makes the eyes lose their ability to focus on close objects. This is considered a normal part of the aging process, and symptoms typically start when patients are 40-45 years old.

A Little Prevention Goes a Long Way

All of these vision conditions can be effectively treated with either eyeglasses or contact lenses. Corrective lenses may only be needed during certain activities like reading, watching television, or driving, or they might be needed at all times.

Comprehensive exams are essential in checking for vision problems, eye diseases, refractive errors, and overall health. How frequently they should happen depends on your age and circumstances.
