Treatment
The only treatment available for cataracts is a surgical procedure called
Phaco Emulsification with Artificial Lens Implantation. Cataract surgery
is performed on an outpatient basis. There is no preparation needed for
contemporary cataract surgery. You do not have to discontinue any medications
prior to surgery. Your eye will be treated with topical anesthetic prior
to the procedure. Little, if any discomfort, is felt. There is no need for
a shot to "numb" the eye. First, a tiny incision (2.5 mm) will
be made in the peripheral cornea. A small phaco emulsification instrument
(about the size of a pen tip) is then used to break up and vacuum away the
cloudy cataract. Once the cataract is removed, an artificial lens will be
inserted through the same tiny incision and set into its permanent position.
The actual surgery takes approximately ten minutes to complete.
No sutures are needed to close the tiny incision. Following the procedure,
you will need to rest a short while before being discharged home. Once home,
you may resume normal daily activity.
