Clearlens Extraction
Although the lens is generally removed due to the development of a cataract,
it may also be removed safely for refractive reasons. By removing the natural
lens, one has the opportunity to replace it with an artificial lens of a
different refractive power. In this way we can treat and eliminate refractive
errors such as myopia, hyperopia, and in some instances astigmatism.
Appropriate candidates for clear lens extraction may include patients
with:
High levels of myopia or hyperopia
Age greater than 40
Visually, insignificant cataract changes
Desire to have distance and near vision without resorting to glasses
The surgery for clear-lens extraction is the same as cataract surgery (see
treatment for cataracts).
